Should You Resign or Wait to be Fired?

There are all kinds of reasons why your employer might be looking to show you the nearest exit. They may feel that you are not performing as well as you should be, or they may just feel that you don’t fit in with the company culture. If you are in a situation where you have the choice to resign or be fired, it is important to weigh up the pros and cons.

These are some of the positives and negatives of resigning from your job:

  • Employability

It can be difficult to secure a job in the Middle East and statistics show that youth unemployment is well above the global average. With 5 million workers entering the Middle East job market each year, finding a new job can be a lot more challenging than it may be in other parts of the world. This is one of the reasons why it may be more beneficial to resign, rather than waiting to be fired. If you are dismissed from your role, it is likely to show on your reference, which can reduce your employability for future employers. It is important to consider your future and make the right decision to ensure you don’t affect your job prospects.

  • Unemployment benefit

If you quit your job, you may struggle to get unemployment benefit. There tend to be some restrictions on unemployment benefit and it may take longer to get it if you resign, rather than if you are fired. There are over one million people claiming unemployment benefit in Saudi Arabia, so there is already a high demand, making it more difficult to make a successful claim. You may want to consider whether you need unemployment benefit and can afford to wait for it, before you make your decision on quitting.

  • Compensation

Workers in the Middle East can expect to receive compensation if the reason for the termination is subjective. The compensation may be in the form of payment in lieu of untaken annual leave, unpaid notice period or an end of service gratuity.

It is worth asking your employer if you are entitled to compensation pay if your contract is terminated and if so, it might be worth choosing this route. If you resign, you will not receive any form of compensation.
